Thompson Springs is the project of Chicago native Matt Smith. His songwriting, which PBS called "a mix of folk with a western feel,” and love of the road and unknown, has led the band down a circuitous route on tours across Europe, New Zealand, and the expanse of America. The bands 2020 debut, Undertones, was recorded with the help of Wilco's Pat Sansone. Detroit Public Radio (WDET) noted that they pull influences from classic songwriters, like Tom Petty, to more recent indie artists, like Kurt Vile. 2023 will bring a new album, Standby, produced by Pat Keen of Humbird, and recorded live, featuring the full 6 piece band and the debut of harmonica player Ryan Suzuka.
